Senator Gordon Johnson released the following statement in response to a raid conducted by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at a Newark establishment on Thursday, January 23:
“The ICE raid that took place at a Newark business, which resulted in the questioning of U.S. citizens, is an unacceptable action that goes against the core values we defend here in New Jersey. No one should live in fear for their safety or security when going to work, attending school, or seeking help from those meant to serve and support them. These operations are not only counterproductive but also damaging to our communities. They send the message to our immigrant neighbors, who are our friends and vital contributors to our society, that they must hide or risk persecution.
“President Trump has made it clear that he will stop at nothing to target immigrants, permitting ICE to enter schools, places of worship, and medical facilities, and has even threatened to investigate and criminally charge local and state officials who refuse to comply with his orders. We cannot afford to wait. New Jersey must send a strong message that we stand united with our immigrant communities in the face of these escalating threats by passing the Immigrant Trust Act now.”
